You can even send PGP through VANs with just the ISA and IEA envelope,
regardless of comms method.

I generally just follow the posting, however may
I comment that FTP to VAN processes have been going
on since 1995 when sessions were established between
Klienschmidt and CHRW. Security issues were satisfied
by assigned username and password at both sender and
reciever. Further security has been implemented by
using PGP for encryption.
This technique has also been used for FTP transfers with
financial institutions.
The reason that FTP and PGP have been used is the cost
is reasonable on UNIX based platforms. Like free.
Other VANS now support the FTP capabilities.
