RE: FTP to VAN

X12.58 is what is being referred to here, I think. Paired segments are
introduced into the interchange or transaction, and the EDI data that falls
between is encrypted and put into a BIN segment.
Going from memory here, so take this with a grain of salt. Maybe two.
What was:
ISA*...
GS*...
ST*850*1
BEG*12345*040220*..
NTE*ZZ*CIA ORDER FOR STEALTH PAPER CLIPS
PO1*...
CTT*...
SE*1
GE*...
IEA*...
becomes something like:
ISA*...
S1S*...
BIN*AKD9na009dlamaakKDLAKA99238daldka98aald9KDLAKDEIWETP*52
S1E*...
IEA*...
The ISA (and GS can be left intact to allow for ordinary routing. Among the
objections against this approach were:
1) inconsistent support of the BIN segment by translation software
2) sometimes who is sending to whom is just as sensitive as what they are
sending (what the spooks call traffic analysis)

Steve,
I think you are referring to the part of the EDIFACT / X12 specifications
that allow for encryption *WITHIN* the interchange? Is there somewhere I
could find more with regards to this encryption scheme, that you know of?
I remember reading about this somewhere long ago and want to explore now.
Hope to hear more from you. Thanks, Steve.
