And this coming from a true salesman from a company that specializes in
outsourcing!

My point was to say that Outsourcing is not for everybody and you have to
weigh how much control you want to lose in your data manipulation. Try
making a map change and get the answer "we will have to give you a timetable
on when we can get this done and it should be ready in about a month or so
due to our back load of other customers requests". If management is
comfortable with that, let them try it. They may just say we need to bring
this back in house so we can get it done faster.

I have been in this situation before and management finally got the point
and brought everything back in house so we can make our own changes and not
have to wait because we were low on the totem pole.

Been there, done that. Do your homework!!!!

Just my opinion from a functional EDI person.

Wow!

Don’t hold back R.A.Welbon, tell us what you really think of Outsourcing…

Lad,

I understand your position and I have worked with others in the
past that were in an identical situation. If I may take a moment of your
time I would like to show you several positive points of outsourcing. First
off, you will not be out of a job. Even when companies outsource they still
must retain an EDI coordinator. Essentially, a liaison between the two
parties. Think of outsourcing as your own personal EDI department,
reporting to you. All the leg work is now done by your EDI dept – the
Outsourcer.

Outsourcing does not have to be expensive, I would direct you to
our cost calculator at www.ecediinc.com <http://www.ecediinc.com/> for more
information.

Lack of expertise? Hmmm, maybe EDI Outsourcers have little
knowledge about the actual business practices, but most are Experts at EDI,
and E-Commerce in general.

Mapping does not take forever. It is dependent on several factors like
number of trading partners and number of documents per trading partner. You
will probably finds that the mapping is expedited.

I apologize if this argument is biased. Outsourcing is not evil, it has a
purpose. Perhaps it is not a good fit for every organization but there is a
place and time for, otherwise it would not be an option.

Thank you,

Chris Burns

You will find that most places are expensive when it comes to outsourcing.
Expensive in the fact they charge for the mapping and also the time it takes
to get the project done. The thing you should be concentrating is the
ability to get things done in a timely manner to satisfy your customers and
suppliers. I have dealt with outsourcing companies before and I have found
that it sometimes takes forever to get things done because you are not the
only one they service. These companies do not have the expertise that comes
from your internal business requirements, they just do what you tell them to
do. This sometimes leads to many iterations of mapping and testing.

Let your management know that by taking this function out of your control
will have a large impact on how you can make changes to your environment in
a timely manner and are these costs they want to incur in sacrificing
service to their customer and supplier base. Money is not always a reason
not to do something.

There are other things that can be brought up like control of your documents
in-house. I know of a supplier of mine that it will take about 2 months for
him to implement and 824 application advice because his outsourcing company
told him that is when they can get to it. An 824 is just a rip and read
document and this should be very simple.

Take the business function approach along with the monetary issues and let
your management decide. They may not want to sacrifice the control of being
able to get things done in house or being a slave to when the outsourcing
company can get to it.

My thoughts for the day.

Are you serious?!! You have an obligation to present all reasonable
alternatives, with pros and cons. Price alone is not a subtle way to
weigh things in your favor. Anyway, the "management team" should fire
your sorry ass - not so much for dishonesty, but for a complete lack of
panache.

The company I work for is looking to outsource our EDI mapping. I
need to find a few vendors that can handle this for us. I am
looking for the most expensive vendors since I would like to keep
the mapping in-house. I need to present some costly alternatives to
my management team. If anyone can supply me with some EDI vendors I
would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you
