John,

That is no different.

REF03 is also not a Composite. It is still just an Alpha element. REF02
is normally an Identifier qualified by REF01, and REF03 is an 80 character
'description'. Any character defined there would be part of the string and
NOT a delimeter. Now REF04 is a Composite, see the C040 at the top?

Example:

REF*ZZ*Some Identifier* A | free form description up to 80 chars |
Could be anything |
*ZZ+ Some Other ID | with Pipe+ZZ+And Another ID+ZZ+And Yet Another!!!
| with Pipe!~

Where the "+" char is defined in ISA16. Spaces are valid too, within AN
elements.. (some translators will truncate trailing spaces though).
I wrapped it for visibiltiy ... it likely would wrap in email anyway.

Does this help?

Mary

Oops. Sorry. I made a type-o ! The string with the | delimiter is in REF03
not REF02.

REF*ZZ**the string | goes | here|

From the answers I've gotten, my customer is correct in what they send
(regardless of whether they should simply strip it out to make their partner
happy).
In this case they are not sending the 80 character string in the REF04 so
what they have done is valid EDI. Their partner is wrong.

Thanks for all the replies. Love this group!
