I'd invite you to look at xmlLinguist from SysOnyx, Inc at
http://www.xmllinguist.com. It does and doesn't do what you're asking for. It
does translate text documents into EDI (flatfiles, X12 files, CSV files, etc)
but it does not map to a different structure, it simply translates the document
into XML. It also doesn't create a good documentation, is simply translates the
document into XML. There's a very good reason for this, we decided to make the
application zero in and excel on one simple aspect, Text-to-XML translation.

Our theory is "why recreate the wheel" when there's already good mapping and
documentation languages in XML. Once the file is in XML, you can apply an XML
stylesheet to it (a very powerful mapping language) and/or apply an XML Schema
to it (a very powerful validation/documentation language). Along those lines,
SysOnyx, Inc. is creating applications for these languages (xmlCartographer for
XML Stylesheets and xmlArchitect for XML Schemas). Note that these applications
are just development environments for already existing languages. You don't need
these applications to create a stylesheet or schema, but you do need xmlLinguist
to get that text file into XML.

Combine xmlLinguist with these other applications and you have what you're
looking for, and for a very affordable price, around $250 for all three.

Dear All
I would like to know if any of you have come across a mapping tool for use
between data formats
(for example, EDI and XML) that allows the creation of technical maps between
data formats in
addition to generating a functional definition of the field connections and
rules.

I know of the many mapping products/editors within the XML space that offer
drag and drop
utilities for the mapping creation but I have not as yet come across any
solutions that allow both
the creation of the mapping and generate some GOOD mapping documentation
(commonly accepted
formats).

Thanks for your feedback and any pointers.
Steve
