We integrate business rules that a computer is capable of determining into
our system to the maximum extent possible. Very few of these rules are
integrated into the translator, though. Exceptions include: recognizing
orders with more than one ship-to, orders where ordered quantity requires a
change in ordered SKU. The business rules are included in the main order
validation program that runs on our database server.

One of my boss's priorities has been educating the company about EDI
capabilities. We did a lunch-and-learn session for the whole company some
months ago, and the presentation has now become part of the training for new
customer service people. I hope other departments include it as well.

I am curious about industry-wide practices. How integrated are your
business rules into your EDI translator?
