The quote is hardly surprising given the source. After all, WebMD has had
some ... challenges ... living up to their own hype in this area. While it
is true that there are still multiple interpretations of what is compliant
under HIPAA the landscape now is much better than it was six months ago, and
even more so than six months prior to that. If anything it is easier for
providers to submit data now. Prior to HIPAA the Payers were in the driver's
seat with regards to dictating formats. Now the provider community has
significantly more leverage that it once had.

Bear in mind also that WebMD does not WANT small practices to submit data
directly. What you are reading here is a Clearing House claiming that they
remain the gatekeepers to EDI. This is not the case. More payers are
accepting claims directly from providers now and this is increasing ... in
spite of what WebMD and the like would prefer to see happen.

Amusing? Perhaps, but I would call it more self-serving than anything else.

John

Those of you in healthcare might find this amusing.

Quote of the Week

"There is no single HIPAA. There are as many flavors of HIPAA as there are
payers today. Virtually every payer has adopted a different interpretation,
[and] they've published more than 400 unique 'companion guides' for
providers. It's virtually impossible for the small group practice to submit
HIPAA-compliant claims directly."

-- Robert Holstein, CEO of WebMD, quoted in the May 2004 issue of Healthcare
Informatics magazine.
