The '997' Functional Acknowledgment and TA1 Interchange Acknowledgement are used
to report compliance errors. The '997' is GENERALLY
used only for "X12 Error" reporting, not for "application" error reporting.
And it's not just errors on the sender end: transmissions can/do get garbled
(though not as often as they used to), resulting in a
compliance error and the need to resend.

When installed, hit Help/Explain Report. Very nice explanation of the '997' --
alone that's worth the cost of a license ($25.00,
with discounts for multiple copies. Not too much EDI software available at
twenty-five bucks or less, is there?).
