RE: Transaction tracking and notification tools

The difference between an architect and an analyst? About $30 or 40 grand
per year.

A reasonably good model for this IT terminology is building construction,
where you have:
architects (architects)
engineers (developers)
contractors (managers)
project managers (project managers)
skilled craftsmen (IT analysts and business analysts)
Each role calls for a skill set and temperament which is significantly
different from the others, though there is some skills overlap. Skill in
one role is not sufficient qualification for another role, though it is
helpful in becoming a first-level supervisor.
There is no rank hierarchy, though the workflow is roughly down the list
(with numerous feedback loops).
For more detail, look at the requirements at dice.com or brassring.com.
