Gina Ann-

I'd have to agree with Jeff. While the American standard is indeed
heavily influenced by American companies, many X12 participants also
participate in the EDIFACT standards process, which is part of the
United Nations. In some industries, like Automotive, there has actually
been a concerted effort over time to keep the X12 and EDIFACT standards
in sync wherever possible. You also have American-based companies (GM
being a very large example) that are utilizing EDIFACT standards since
they in fact operate as a global entity, even though their headquarters
is in the US. My company uses X12 to communicate to US suppliers but
EDIFACT to those in Brazil.

Saying that X12 is designed for US and EDIFACT is designed for
International vastly oversimplifies the standards environment in play
here.

Jeff
I reailize any trading partner is allowed to use any standard but what I
am asking is X12 created for transaction designed for American companies
where EDIFACT is created for International? I know X12 is created by
ANSI (American National Standards Institute).
Thanks.

I wouldn't agree to that. In the Electronics Industry, we have EDI
relationships with customers world-wide. For our customers who have
both U.S. and international locations, instead of having ANSI for their
U.S. sites and EDIFACT for their European sites, they just one of the
standard for all sites world-wide. There are no governing rules that
say which standard you must use unless you have it in an EDI agreement.
I would say that more U.S. companies use ANSI and more European and Asia
companies use EDIFACT.

Hello Group

Can someone please confirm that the X12 standards are mainly an
American
National Standard while EDIFACT standards are an International
standard?
Thank you.
