Dog wagging, seed planting, or bus driving doesn't change your customers'
business practices. Placing a web ordering form won't accomplish much
either, because customers who don't want to invest in EDI also don't want to
do double entry - their own books and your web site. (Been there, done
that.)

Yes, involve your sales and customer service teams in the effort to get your
customers to realize the benefits of EDI in making their supply chain more
efficient.

Yes, personally contact your customer base to determine their willingness to
implement EDI.

Yes, develop an understanding of tools and services available so you can
help those unfamiliar with the concept of EDI understand that a $150,00
intestment isn't their only option.

You won't get them all, and you won't get most of them right now. Some will
be more frustrating to deal with on an EDI basis than they were when they
were FAXing orders.

EDI is like life. You have to take it one day at a time. But don't let it
make you "sick" or "tired."

PETA NOTE: No actual dogs were wagged in the completion of this post or the
business discussed herein.

Classic tail wagging the dog.

Instead plant the seed and show your internal customers how it is better to
receive these orders automated, and let them drive the bus.

Two suggestions - pick one

1) Refuse orders not received via EDI. (If you don't clear this with
management first, you may only have one choice ... read on.)
2) Get a different job.

Customers that do not place an emphasis on automation will continue to buy -
from you or from your competitors. Technology still hasn't perfected a data
conversion device for written orders that works better or more efficiently
than a competent human being.

Come to think of it, you have a third option. Decide not to let the less
convenient realities of doing business dictate your personal outlook. Most
of us has chosen option 3 - or should.

Best wishes,

Does anyone have a solution to these nagging inbound FAX orders? I
am sick and tired of supporting all this paper and want just EDI.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Galagir.
