If you mean, can you bypass the established commercial VANs by using FTP and
email? Yes, but only if your partners agree to communicate with you using
these methods. If you are talking about actually establishing a real,
fee-charging commercial VAN, you probably need more expertise than is
evidenced by your question. I have consulted on two major projects that
involved establishing a VAN. One succeeded because it was a state-mandated
requirement for a sub-industry that was not already EDI capable. The other
backed off the idea of creating their own VAN because it was in an industry
in which the major players were already EDI capable. The new players were
small and were given the option of email. FTP was already a mandated
requirement for. State agencies were also mandating various communications
methodologies(VANs, GISB, EDIINT, FTP) none of which required a new VAN. I
suspect the only reason they thought a proprietary VAN was possible was due
to the fact they had implemented a similar solution in another country under
a greatly different political situation.
