EDIINT (EDI over Internet) is usually encrypted using the AS2 specification.
http://searchdatabase.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid13_gci901539,00.html

This is becoming very popular, especially since WalMart said AS2 or else!
It's a step better than dialing to Arkansas using a bisynch modem ;-)

Advantages of AS2 over VANs:
No VAN charges
Instantaneous 'push' to Trading Partner.

Disadvantages:
Expensive AS2 software (There is a client & server side).
Multiple partners means multiple certificates & multiple connections.
You need an AS2 server running 24/7.
You need a dedicated IP (or use a Dynamic DNS service like DNS2GO).

Once someone has AS2, it's pretty easy to add another Partner (and
certificate).

Make sure you get all the costs. WalMart pushed many suppliers to adopt AS2,
with free/cheap software from bTrade and iSoft. The price to add an additional
Partner may be very high, since they consider the WalMart version a loss-
leader.
It's very similar to ftp, in that you have to connect, login & transfer from/to
each partner.
