Re: UNIX Platform Mapping Software

Katie,
After much soul searching, I will commit heresy. Get a translator, there
are several good ones out there. However, for mapping software, save your
dollars and use something like Perl. My reasoning is simple:
1. It is free and runs on nearly every platform.
2. Perl is easy to learn, even a dummy like me can learn it, from a book!
(ie. low training cost). It is an old fashioned scripting language, with
powerful capabilities if you need them. Data mapping is generally simply
transforming the data from one format to another, a quite easy application.
3. If you need help on projects, you can get the job done by placing a very
small ad in nearly any newspaper. You will have plenty of folks that can do
an excellent job. Mapping software is generally known by a very few people.
4. Perl will not go out of business. It is open source, and has thousands
of users.
My contention that companies that sell the mapping software have limited the
growth of EDI by making the cost of entry way too complex and expensive. It
will be better for all of us (ourselves, our companies, the US Economy, and
the global economy) if we promote the electronic exchange of business
documents. The value will then be spent on the goods and services exchanged by
the
transaction, and not the cost of the transaction itself.
There are a few alternatives, Python comes to mind. Good luck with your
search!
Regards,
Richard Hug
