RE: Is EDI dead?

Exactly I agree. I've implemented EDI processes that happen in seconds,
but I had to monkey with the translator.
I some cases the business drives IT and they view IT as a black box and
care about the dollars and the results. In some cases IT initiatives are
driven from a CIO strategy level (i.e. "We must convert to XML by 2005").

The format of the messages doesn't have a lot to do with whether it's batch
oriented; I wager that I could write a very efficient and robust realtime
processing system that chewed on X12 and EDIFACT transactions just as
easily
as XML. (Not saying it'd be as easy to write, just that the transactions
would be processed realtime in a similar fashion to XML.)

Darn right! It's all about the Benjamins. Business people don't care about
XML, EDI or $INSERT_MARKUP_LANGUAGE_HERE. Just provide results, accurately
and quickly.
