Re: X12 CICA: Is it the future? Does anyone really "model"?

I really didn't mean that just any person on the street would "create
X12 transaction sets." Transaction sets would probably still be
devised by interested parties in a standards-setting environment such as
X12.
It's just that instead of cobbling together a random collection of EDI
segments as is done today, developers would be able to "model" their
data architecture with a tool (e.g., EDIFIX or Rational Rose) - using
"core components" or suchlike - and then press a button to generate the
corresponding X12 transaction set or EDIFACT message. But, more
likely - since no one is likely to bother modeling the lower-level EDI
components of elements, segments and common loops - standards folks
would simply generate XSD schema from ebXML core components, instead.

William,
As a developer I model application architecture quite often with UML.
The idea of UML works great. I am not sure what you mean here though by
saying "Create X12 Transaction sets." Granted I have not checked this
CICA out so, please forgive my ignorance. If I create custom transaction
sets how will my trading partners and I standardize our data? That seems
to defeat the purpose of EDI.
Thank you,

Supposedly, CICA is a methodology for creating data models, not XML
schema. This means, theoretically, you could create X12 transaction sets
using it. Who here is familiar with data modeling, as in "UML" and
suchlike? Are any of you planning to implement *NEW* messages using
CICA? Since it's X12, it's okay and not unclean. Right?
