Maybe sticking to X12 837 schema is part of that problem, too.
There's no question XML is more bloated than delimited text. And the
delimited text is more bloated than some binary format. Somewhere there's a
comfort level for you as to how easy the data is to decode vs. how portable
and compact it is. This give and take happens in many places, like security:
Do you want to get on the airplane quickly, bypassing all metal detectors/
etc. OR take time and be checked out and feel safe?
Everyone is different.
