Once again the ECCC - a not for profit organization - has their kimono
yanked open......

The entire data sync world wide plan will fail unless the various service
providers come to grips with the idea that even if a gorilla or a herd of
gorillas tries to steamroll it into existence unless everyone can justify
the costs it will not work. And I do not mean that they justify it by
quoting that the gorilla will cut them off if they do not.... Too late for
that threat now that so many dates have come and gone. I mean that the
vendors can gain some use or yet another "cataloging system" that they are
paying for.

And therein lies the trick to a successful datapool - both demand and supply
sides can see monetary benefits from the investment.

First the cost to enter ("onboarding" - another new gorilla term) should be
reasonable since only the supply side has the chore to enter this data and
seldom do it by keying the data in.

Then meaningful benefits from the manipulation and use of the datapool (data
and graphics) must exist within the vertical involved.

At Commport we have worked very hard to ensure that our datapool (part of
the GDSN) provides low cost of entry, even lower annual maintenance
costs -( who performs the work anyway?) and has associated tools that both
sides can operate, cooperate in and reap benefits. (Our costs for the total
package is about 10% of the ECCC costs and significantly lower than any
other service provider for the UCCNet related activity.

But this is not the vehicle for this type of chat - if you are interested in
more info we can chat off line.

Gorillawise, I was thinking about WalMart and AS2.

UCCNet is one dance that I'm sitting out... for now.

99.9% of our clients were forced by other Trading Partners to put their UPCs
into the QRS Catalog. QRS will be synching all their data with UCCNet at no
extra charge (above the already high charges their clients are now paying).
For that reason, we're recommending our clients let QRS synch with UCCNet.

Of course, I could rant for hours about ECCC (the Canadian equivalent of
UCC)
and how one client was forced to join, only to have the whole implementation
shelved for a few years. Soon enough, they will have the privilege of
paying
ECCC about $10.00 per UPC per year. What a scam!
