"Do _you_ have an opinion on HIPAA?" The only part of HIPAA that I'm
prepared to proffer an opinion on is the Transactions and Code Sets
Rule. It was a great opportunity for vendors and consultants. I don't
have a problem with government involvement in [developing] Industry
Standards. However, like you, I don't think a particular set of rigid
X12 EDI standards should be imposed on otherwise consenting adults when
conducting particular transactions (like claims, payments, etc.)
electronically.

has to give something to charity." Who cares? How did this get
discussion get started? Bryce Nielsen seems to be of the notion that
UCCNet, as not-for-profit subsidiary of the Uniform Code Council, must
give 5% of its "gross on charitable means." I honestly don't know the
difference between "not-for-profit", "non-profit" and "for-profit." The
latter can have shareholders, I know, but based on some of my sad
experiences it certainly doesn't ever have to show profits!! But,
anyway, if this 5% business is true, then consider that the UCC - the
owner of UCCNet and itself a not-for-profit standards organization -
could be the charitable recipient of UCCNet's largesse. What was
Bryce thinking? That the dough would go to the Sisters of Mercy?

Being Canadian is irrelevant. We trade with the same partners, using the
same VANS and providers.
HIPAA consists of 3 requirements (Privacy, Transactions & Security). The
whole process continues to be relevant to this community. My comments
were specifically about the government involvement in Industry
Standards, and how (in my opinion) that was a very bad idea.
Do _you_ have an opinion on HIPAA?
I am _still_ looking for something that says that a 'not for profit' has
to give something to charity. Most Charities are not-for-profit, but
there are thousands of other non-charitable organizations that act as
'not for profits'.

I'm sure that it's a rhetoric question, but: EDI - It's great. Keeps me
very busy and greases the wheels of commerce. X12 - Works fine. As some
wag pointed out: "The best thing about standards is that there are so
many to choose from". EDIFACT - I had one client using it. Mostly
European. X12, EDIFACT, whatever. ebXML - mostly useless. They forgot to
include real examples of business documents and delayed the introduction
of XML by years. UBL - don't know enough to comment about ;-)
