I don't know what Michael is doing, but this gets to the heart of the point
I was trying to make earlier. If the receiver's system isn't able to hand
off to the EDI processor the original data, correctly removing any
formatting characters that an OS, comm protocol, whatever, has inserted,
then there's no assurance that the binary data and any data following it
can correctly be parsed and processed. Any alteration has to be performed
after the sender has calculated the length of the binary data element, and
the receiver must be able to undo the alterations with complete accuracy
before attempting to parse the interchange.
