UNS is fairly straightforward. It was traditionally used as a 'marker'
segment between the header, detail, and trailer sections of a message.

Header UNS+D Detail UNS+S Trailer

The UNS+D gradually disappeared from UNSM's. UNS is seldom *necessary*
in an EDIFACT message; the structure can be parsed without it. EDIFACT 4
introduced a new, more general, system (UGH/UGT segments) to avoid
aliasing; in d00a PAYDUC was the only message which needed it.

The BII seems to be more an index for identifying positions of data
items in lists than for signalling hierarchical levels. HYN looks like a
better candidate for HL equivalence. I am not very comfortable with
hierarchical levels (I was frightened by one as a young consultant) and
the only EDIFACT message I deal with regularly which contains them is
DESADV, in which the hierarchy information is carried by the CPS
segment.

Chris
