William,

Thank you for taking the bait.

Of course you have identified the heretofore limiting issue:
standardization. Until the software packages that SMEs use provide turnkey
standardized XML interfaces, SMEs will not enter the world of electronic
data interchange. Once they do, they will be so much more competitive,
their big-name competitors may need to do some scrambling. All the hype we
have been hearing and laughing at over the past few years has, to be honest,
oversold the simplicity and utility of XML while totally overlooking or
worse, denying the absolute need for further standardization. Without it,
chaos has reigned. I'm glad to hear you are out there fighting for us.

Art, laugh all you want. But the future is closer than you think. For
the SME, UNeDocs will be of special interest. Standardized XML
international business documents will eliminate FAX and paper without
the expense and fuss of X12 or UN/EDIFACT traditional EDI or clunky web
EDI. And UNeDocs will soon be gussied up with ISO 11179 and ISO
15000-5 compliant core components. For more information, see
http://www.unedocs.org. And, yes, UBL - more in line with the big
players' needs - is moving ahead.

I am shocked and amazed at this thread. Didn't I read somewhere sometime
back that XML was The Answer to the SME's, not to mention every other
business' information-sharing problems? Has somebody neglected to tell
them? Billy Joe, say it ain't so.
