Netiquette on the new

Subject: Netiquette on the new edi-l
Folks,

As trivial as this is compared to the events of last week, I am saddened
that edi-l as hosted by UCOP these many years was another casualty of
this terrorist war. So far we only have 544 on the new list out of
about 1500 on the old. It looks like we'll be losing several folks in
the move. Disruption is one of the goals of the terrorist, and here
again they have succeeded.

For the many of the reasons that Mr. Druckenmiller offers such as
archives, file sharing, and bookmarks, it may have been time to move
this list to a new home. However, particularly in light of Mr.
Sullivan's note of last Friday concerning the UCOP system problems, I
think that some of Mr. Druckenmiller's reasons for starting up this
Yahoo list may not be appropriate. Even though this is a virtual
community, it is nonetheless a community for many of us. I have no
issue with those who wish to discuss off topic subjects with their
community. For some folks edi-l is the water cooler or breakroom
chat. However, we need to do this in a responsible fashion regardless
of who hosts us. I have concerns that we might have had similar systems
operation problems even if Yahoo had been hosting the list. If we are
to avoid being considered unwelcome in yet another venue or lose
subscribers, we need to be responsible in use of system resources and
the time of the others who participate. We need to exercise common
sense in things such as off-topic comments, e-mailing attachments versus
posting links, including full text of replies, and "me-too" responses.

For me, it is now time to move on beyond the events of last week.
Deciding when to move on is a very personal decision, particularly for
those who have lost loved ones or coworkers or otherwise had their lives
extremely disrupted. However, we can't let the bastards get us down.
There's a balance here - many of us need to talk in order to get over
the events of last week. However, too much time at this only disrupts
the normal flow of business and plays into the terrorist goals of
disruption and distraction. If you have something you really want to
get off of your chest, go ahead. But do it, move on, and lets get back
to business on this list. It's your patriotic duty.

Regards,
