RE: Experience with EDI and Asian TPs?

I only wish it was that easy to convince management that traveling to their
location to setup EDI would be worth the costs. I have been trying to setup
EDI with two huge customers of ours in Asia for a year and half now.
Basically, I have given them every instruction of how to map from their flat
files, to what segments & qualifiers need to be used. I have found that
many companies in Asia still enjoy the interaction with our Asia Cust
Service team. Additionally, we have a couple of Asian customers who have
EDI but they would rather manually enter POs on our website.

Other details: If the Asian customer has international operations or is hqd
in the U.S., I have found that they are able to support additional
transaction sets besides the 850. Such as 846, 855, 856, 860, 865 & 867.
Also some companies use EDIFACT some use ANSI, no pattern of using one
standard. Communication is difficult based on time zones, however many
contacts I have worked with enjoy using instant messaging versus e-mail.

Travel to their location. Though to some it may appear
as though it's little more than a junket, trust me,
the time spent with direct face to face discussion and
collaboration is incredibly valuable. The Asian
technical community is most welcoming and highly EDI
savvy. In fact, the liklihood is that they will
perhaps accommodate your EDI program requirements
before you are ready to engage in any information
exchange.
Oh, and as far as feedback to your direct inquiries,
Customs does a significant amount of EDIFACT data
exchange with Asian entities, both private and
government.

Cheers!
