RE: <SALES>: webMethods vs. GIS

It appears that article was written by Seeburger. If it truly was an
external article, then it would have mentioned more than one translator.
James - In regards to a recent posting, you mentioned that Seeburger's
product can add a digital signature on an EDI INVOIC interchange for
European partners? How? Can you explain in more detail?
Recent posting on the edi_gns Yahoo user group, names withheld.
I have used the GXS product, and at one point became a Mapping
PM for a major outsourcing project that (the then GE) GXS had
undertaken (in 2000/2001). I started out using GENTRAN:Server for
Unix with the Visual Mapper, then GXS, and now I have become an
accomplished GIS mapper (which uses the NT mapping tool). That said,
here are my thoughts:
GXS can be quirky, to the point of making various kernel
configurations that can conflict with other applications. Also, to
be a "mapper" (IMO) you have to have somewhat of a programming
background (understanding stack manipulation, etc.). In addition to
a Windows-based GUI, it does have an unix/telnet based "CHUI"
(CHarater User Interface) that is very functional (if somewhat of a
challenge to learn).
GIS is a good platform, and using the NT mapper gives you a
great deal of flexibility. In spite of the problems that I've run
into (unclear debugging of maps; convoluted TP Administration;
limited/poor FA Reconciliation (does anybody know anything
different?)), I really like GIS. I have used it for ODBC and XML
mapping, as well as traditional EDI and FF mapping. It also has
integrated SOAP, FTP, and AS2 services available for pushing/pulling
data. If developed properly, it can be a very stable platform that
is easy to support.
Far and away, my favorite is the GENTRAN:Server for Unix series,
specifically with the Visual Mapper. Trading partner setup is
logical and very easy to do...almost fool proof. The mapping tool,
while limited (no user exits; limited data manipulation; etc), is
extremely easy to use. I have had no problem teaching non-
programmers (and even non-EDIers) to use this. The operating
environment (data managers, etc) are easy to configure and maintain,
and best of all (again, IMO), there is enough logging to adequately
debug almost any issue that may come up. While the scripting
language is pretty easy to learn, and worse case can easily be used
to call external scripts/programs.
Since you're issue is communications to the VAN, and you already
have familiarity with the NT Mapper (has it changed much since 3.1?),
GIS would seem like a natural migration to me. I've never heard of
Expedite, so I can't offer any thoughts there.

Subject: <SALES>: [EDI-L] webMethods vs. GIS
Hi Richard,

Exactly the point, neither made the short list.
If you are considering upgrading from Gentran I
would recommend you consider other solutions
beside Webmethods or GIS for your SAP environment.
You commented:
I need facts and opinions.
- Fact is the independent study by Daimler found
neither GIS nor Webmethods are best for an SAP
environment. They didn't even make the short list.
I need war stories. I would LIKE to hear tales
that GIS is great, that it runs rings around
webMethods, that it's relatively painless
to migrate from G:B to GIS (well, okay; I've seen
a Gentran:Basic map and I know that this isn't really true.)
- The independent eval says, "Seeburger is great,
runs rings around any other solution for an SAP
environment." It is as easy to migrate as either of your proposed options.
:-)
- Gentran Basic to GIS is effectively a new
install not an upgrade and this is strong
justification to look at other solutions in the market.
You seem to be predisposed to go GIS but if you
are willing to consider their #1 competitor with
documentation and independent test data to show
it's the best for an SAP user we'd love to talk to you.
Best Regards,
James Hatcher
Seeburger
