The key, of course, is the "without the security features" part.

Classic ftp sends everything in the clear, including username and password
information. There is also no particular authentication that either side
is who they claim to be. Running ftp over SSL encryption (ftps) addresses
the problem of someone seeing the data, but does not do anything for
authentication.

The EDI-INT family of protocols are designed to address all of those
problems. That being said, I would agree that the "certification" process
for EDI-INT implementations is absurd, at least cost wise.
