Re: Busines process question - EDI & firewalls

Luba,
It all depends on the kind of connection you're setting up for new trading
partners. If you're going to be using an existing connection to a VAN, I
question whether your security folks even need to know about it. However,
if you're setting up a point-to-point connection over the public Internet
using AS2, FTP, or whatever, then security may very well need to get
involved. If the connection type (and your configuration) requires that
their traffic be passed through the firewall to your internal network (as
opposed to, for example, using a relatively open system in a DMZ), then
technical configuration changes probably have to be made that security
would want to review.
At any rate, the technical changes are probably trivial and should take
minutes to accomplish if the required information is present. Therefore,
my guess is that you have process issues. I would talk with your security
folks to make sure that your requests have all of the information they need
so that they don't have to chase down any details. Then, you should be
able to make a case with their management that they are taking way too long.
Good luck,
Mike
