Dave et al,

I agree that test data is useless ... mostly. We have a test environment
set up, which I use for testing inbound transactions. It is loaded from a
production backup every once-in-a-while (to be exact), so it has production
DUNS, product codes, etc. I have a table that shows which docs for which
TPs are production, which are test. Incoming tests are thereby routed to
the test environment, production to PROD.

If somebody sends me mocked-up test data, I parse it and look for required
segments and elements, but I won't sign off until I have received real data.
It might not be live, but it is real, meaning they have to show me the
actual N104, product codes, etc.

I also send test outbound transactions using our live database. That way, I
know what they are testing is what they will be processing.

Look, an entire post with no product pitches. Dang, I'm slipping.

Tim,

I second your motion to do away with the use of test data in testing.

To test a document with test data in a production environment you have to
set up test records - test TP,s, test locations with test DUNS nos, test
products with test UPC codes, etc., etc., etc. - that have no relevance to
the database that will be used in the production environment.

This extra work is all unnecessarily time consuming and costly, and it still
doesn't test the production system's ability to correctly process production
data - which I hope is the purpose of testing in the first place.

So, no one's every heard of the putting a "T" instead of a "P" in ISA15?

RANT, Rant, rant....

been made up. It can't be processed through the application so there is no
way to actually test with it. Any transactions sent back have to be
manually doctored. What does this test?

mandate EDI it might be reasonable for them to pay a thrid party to help
bring up partners and deal with the novices. But for a trading partner that
is already EDI capable, the testing is a waste of time.
