RE: <TECH> I65 Repetition Separator

Andy
They introduced the I65 back in 4020, but they didn't actually define any
segments that took advantage of the repeating elements syntax until 4040. I
imagine that was to prepare folks for it.
In 4040, the following segments include repeating elements (See the X12 4040
manual for the details of the segments):
COB (Coordination of Benefits) is used in 834.
COM (Communication Contact Information) is used in 100, 101, 111, 132, 133,
138, 155, 189, 224, 252, 267 and 650.
CQ (Credentials and Qualifications) is used in 132.
DMG (Demographic Information) is used in 111, 130, 132, 135, 138, 144, 146,
148, 155, 175, 186, 187, 189, 190, 191, 194, 200, 201, 202, 248, 252, 255,
256, 265, 267, 268, 270, 271, 273, 274, 275, 276, 277, 278, 284, 285, 500,
810, 811, 833, 834, 837, 838 and 872.
EMS (Employment Position) is used in 113, 130, 132, 138, 155, 186, 189, 194,
198, 200, 201, 248, 252, 255, 267, 274, 284, 286, 540, 820 and 833.
ENM (School Enrollment Data) is used in 133.
ISI (Institutional Staff Information) is used in 132 and 133.
SCT (School Type) is used in 133 and 135.
WLD (Workload Detail) is used in 132.
Of course, just because these segments have elements that _can_ repeat,
there is nothing that says you must use more than the first occurrence.

Subject: [EDI-L] <TECH> I65 Repetition Separator
X12 4020 introduced the Repetition Separator (I65) to the standard
replacing the Interchange Control Standards Identifier (I10). I think
Rachael reported something about this earlier on in the old list.
I've had a quick look at the documentation but I couldn't find any
implementation information so I've a couple of questions...
First, has anyone seen any real-world use of this separator that they
can share? I'm not talking about just its presence in the ISA but
actually in use in data.
I couldn't see any definitions of repeating elements in the standards
(although I didn't look real hard) but its theoretical use seems to be a
bit ambiguous. For example, if I have a repeating composite element
which contains a repeating simple element and an optional simple
element, how do I know when the composite element changes to its next
instance rather than the simple element repeating?
Thanks for any insights.
Andy
