I agree, and I just want to mention that it is a pretty bad idea to move
all direct EDI costs onto your suppliers, because of course they will
include them in their next calculation round into their prices (or in
the quality, or go out of usiness).

To optimize the overal costs of a supplychain, collaboration is
required. And this indeed requires fair communications.

VAN interconnects do introduce additional handling, like more often
failed transactions and missing visibility for delivery, it may also
introduce addtional delays. However forcing suppliers onto a VAN is most
likely not the best solution for that.
