RE: Translation over the Web

Mike,
I agree with your assessment that rip and read is not the answer -
integration with applications is the real progress. iConnect provides
integration with applications such as QAD, Great Plains, JobBoss, EPICORE, SAP
etc as part of the paid service. We are evaluating the possibility of offering
such services much like free web translation.
Most companies in EDI space would like to see EDI grow but we make it
too hard to implement and maintain and we make it too costly. I believe the
basic premise of EDI was to convert to one format(EDI) then "you are done" - the
reality is that most implementations are too cumbersome to implement and while
the implementations are similar, they are different enough that you can't simply
add another trading partner.
Web EDI companies have certainly made it possible for smaller shops to
add a trading partner very easy. I would suggest - so easy that smaller
companies can add new trading partner much quicker that their larger trading
partners. It is up to current providers to make this easy for large companies.
What every company wants eventually is to get the data in their
ERP/MRP and I will dare suggest that Microsoft Excel is most widely used
resource planning tool. I see all VAN to translator providers slowly moving
towards providing out of the box adapters for widely used ERP packages-
essentially providing data to users the way they want it not in an intermediate
format such as EDI. Any VAN that fails to provide these services will continue
to shrink.
Those who feel threatened by such advances - don't be threatened.
These advances tend to provide more opportunity then they take away from the
specialists in the field.

"Web-based" EDI has been around for awhile now - the only thing different
about this service is that it is free. Take heart Michael, as we all know
the real challenges and opportunities are not in finding yet another
replacement for "rip and read", it's in integrating EDI with the back-end
systems.
