Re: Building Maps in Gentran
I must agree with Brian on this, it is not as simple as you think it is. The
software to install is easy enough but when you get into the mapping aspects of
Sterling and creating templates you are in a totally new game. I have worked
with the Sterling software for years and have learned plenty of system tricks
and techniques. Like Brian said if you want to get this done and done right you
should hire someone with experience and stop wasting your time and the company's
money.

Your first disservice as a consultant was overselling a solution to your
customer. You really don't need to buy a mapper
and all the supporting pieces to do one transaction. You could have
written a program in one of your several languages
and used an outsourcer to pass the data to you via ftp.
You'll get quite an education installing the "basic" edition. Be
prepared to spend plenty of time on the phone with support,
and try to do it during the daytime ... when they are available and you
can bill.
The smartest thing you said was "... hire someone if I have to."
The stupidest thing you did was insulting someone you don't know who
could help you. I hope you don't have that attitude with
your client ... no, wait, I hope you do so I get a new client.
