Fw: Translator

Good Morning:

I would have to backup what Howard said in his e-mail. You get what you pay for
and inexpensive is not always the answer.

Most large players are going to encourage you the supplier, that you need to be
doing EDI with a major EDI player in their industry. Some of you might not
agree with this but I come from the automotive sector with over 17 years of
experience and had I went with a small EDI translation company it would have
caused a lot of work on my part to get the larger automotive companies to agree
that I could use my smaller EDI package to play with the big boys.

Also, in the automotive sector, we are asked to bring our suppliers along with
EDI as well. And this can cause many problems as our suppliers are not as big
as us. And requiring them to have an EDI staff and solution will break many of
them and drive our overall cost up making our products to expensive for our
customers. My choice has always been to have a major player in the EDI
translation field who brings many kind of solutions to the table to that I can
deal with my customer but also allow me to have a solution that my suppliers can
live with as well. Web forms come to mind and other ways to get data to me from
small suppliers so that we can all make money with dealing with one of the major
automotive companies.

Since so much downsizing has and is occuring in the automotive sector is becomes
necessary to have solutions that are cost effective and easy to maintain.

I would think the first thing to know before answering this would be a
feature list.

Your most likely customers will be small companies who have to support
EDI to sell to a large company. Ease of use and integration with small
business manufacturing and/or accounting packages would be important.

I should say that my own employer would not be interested; we rely on
EDI for a significant percentage of our revenue and would only trust a
translator with a large installed base and the resources of a large
company behind it.

How much of a demand is there for an inexpensive, custom written EDI
translator (for Windows) that would include support and updates?

Just trying to get some kind of idea as to whether it'd be worth my
time to continue some code I started writing a while ago...
