And perhaps you also recall, with 1.x Mercator you COULD purchase that "runtime
only" (production) license as a regular "on the
price list" item. I believe the price was $250.00 in the US; the authoring
system was much more, but I don't think it was today's
$10K. The 'runtime only' license is no longer on the price list.
Last time I checked (about two years ago) on the availability of a 'runtime
only' license, I got shuffled around to several
departments and was finally 'offered' a special quote: Ten such licenses in a
pack for 'only' $15,000.
Too bad, I still think the 'runtime only' license for the mapping product (not
all the integration bells and whistles) at a
reasonable price (say $200-$400) in any quantities would encourgage vertical
market developers (e.g., moi) to use the Mercator
mapping engines within their own products.
(FWIW, last evening I did some
maintenance on a client's version 1.4 system.
That's hard going back and forth like that. I have
three current clients: on versions 1.4, 6.7 and 7.5 respectively. Not that
there's a heck of a lot of difference between 6x and 7x
in the Map and Type Designers, but 1x to 6x/7x is like time travel).
