Andy,

For more guidance on this please go to the Design Rules & Guidelines which
are included in the X12 Standards book. Section 2.7 Repeating Data Elements
should help to answer your questions.

I would insert the verbiage here, but I do not have the latest version of
the standards in softcopy and Section 2.7 is much too lengthy to manually
type all of it into this message.

A repeating data element would occur in a data segment or in a composite
data structure. When an element is using as a repeating data element a
repetition designator must be used. Section 3.7.3.3 of X12.6 Application
Control Structure defines a repetition designator. Basically it's an element
that indicates the maximum number of occurrences of the simple data element
or the composite data structure. The repetition designator can also indicate
that a repeating element may occur no more than once, or contain a specific
value greater than one.

X12 4020 introduced the Repetition Separator (I65) to the standard
replacing the Interchange Control Standards Identifier (I10). I think
Rachael reported something about this earlier on in the old list.

I've had a quick look at the documentation but I couldn't find any
implementation information so I've a couple of questions...

First, has anyone seen any real-world use of this separator that they
can share? I'm not talking about just its presence in the ISA but
actually in use in data.

I couldn't see any definitions of repeating elements in the standards
(although I didn't look real hard) but its theoretical use seems to be a
bit ambiguous. For example, if I have a repeating composite element
which contains a repeating simple element and an optional simple
element, how do I know when the composite element changes to its next
instance rather than the simple element repeating?

Thanks for any insights.

Andy
