The way we handled it was if a trading partner placed an order for parts which
contained lead, the order is rejected and an 855 is sent with an R2 code in the
ACK01 and an MSG
segment is sent stating to reorder with lead free part #.

The EU is requiring product certifications from suppliers, some trade
organizations are talking about grandfathering part numbers and establishing
new ones for RoHS.
There are short term exemptions for some products that might have to be
labeled as exempt, etc. There is also the sister legislation WEEE.

What type of impact? I work for an Electronics Mfg Company. A large
majority of our world-wide EDI TPs are sending free form text on their
EDI POs "parts must be RoHS compliant". Additionally, our marketing
depts. have contacted customers directly and told them to change their
material part cross-references to the updated part #. Most companies
simply added a "LF" tag on the end of their parts identifying "lead
free".
