This is an email one of our clients received in 2003:

IMPORTANT REMINDER
The Home Depot moves toward Data Synchronization
October 8, 2003 - On September 27, 2003, your customer, The Home Depot,
requested that you load your product data into ECCnet Canada's National Product
Registry to ensure industry standard compliance, product data integrity and
product data synchronization. Product listing through the ECCnet registry will
become part of The Home Depot's standard terms & conditions of trade effective
December 31, 2003.
Your first step towards data synchronization is to register your Company Prefix
with the ECCnet Company Prefix Licencing service. The Home Depot has requested
that you complete this step by October 15, 2003. If your Company Prefix Licence
is already registered, we thank you.
To help you complete your second step towards data synchronization, The Home
Depot is sponsoring a FREE ECCnet Vendor Education Session on October 28, 2003
at the Toronto Congress Centre. Register online today at www.eccc.org/events.
The Home Depot wants you there!
To further support vendor participation in improving the efficiency of the
supply chain, The Home Depot will soon announce another FREE ECCnet Vendor
Education Session in Montreal.
Data synchronization through the ECCnet registry will enhance the efficiency of
the Hardlines supply chain. As a supplier, you will realize many benefits,
including:
Reductions in invoice discrepancies
Improved purchase order quality
Improved speed-to-market
Expedited changes to existing item information.
-----------------------------------

At considerable time & expense, our client joined ECCC and registered their
various UPC prefixes. ECCC requested legal proof that our client 'owned' the
various divisions that used prefixes in the US, and had permission to use
others that they were distributing...

Then they waited 2 years until:

I would expect that any 832 specs would be available at GS1. You need a
membership to view the specs ;-(
