RE: <TECH>, VDA Information

Thanks Chris, that does help a lot. I was beginning to think there weren't
too many people who have used VDA. With a quick search on the web I was able
to find some VW documentation which may help. Now I just need to find out
out if I can build a custom map in Gentran:Application Integrator to process
the files...
Anyone...?

German Automotive EDI standard. It is a tagged flat file SDF (data
fields at defined column positions and with a defined length) format
with record types effectively defined by the first 3 characters. 128
character records. It looks, and is structured, like the 'flat file'
which is at the application side of many of the earlier EDI converters,
although it can have detail information on the final header record in a
message, which Mr Spock would undoubtedly have declared to be illogical
(and he would have been right). A materials release can look thus (if a
line doesn't start with 51x01 it is a wordwrap from the previous line,
trailing blanks will have been deleted by my text editor so the example
appears to have variable length records)

I think you will have problems finding public documentation for the VDA
formats. Such as we have has been obtained from hubs describing their
implementations. This topic was touched on in EDI-L within the last
year, and I drew a blank on any significant information publicly
available on the Web. With luck someone more expert than I will come to
your aid.
We have found that software intended for processing tagged flat files
works successfully with VDA messages.
Regards
Chris
