Thanks Bill and Rachel; that clears up the ambiguity. In the segment
definition of imaginary segment ABC

ABC
ELE01
ELE0101
ELE0102
ELE0103
ELE02
ELE03

Only ELE01, ELE02 and ELE03 can be defined as repeating; ELE0101,
ELE0102 and ELE0103 cannot. In a real data segment, this would look
like...

ISA*...*^*00404*000000001*0*P*>~
...
ABC*1.1>1.2>1.3^1.1>1.2*2*3^3^3~

(ELE01 and ELE03 are defined as repeating).

Now another question; under what circumstances should a translator
reject a document that is still using the old U or X in the I65
position? My thoughts are if the ISA version says 00402 or later then
this should contain a unique separator. Or should translators just say
'if it is U or T then ignore it as the document doesn't use repeat
characters' much the same as they do for the Component Element
Separator?

Maybe a good topic for a poll :)

Thanks again all.

Andy

Bill,

You're correct and my statement is unclear. A repeating element can be
**either** a simple data element or a composite data structure and would
occur within a data segment.

Thanks for keeping me honest!

Rachel

I disagree with the statement, "A repeating data element would occur in
a
data segment or in a composite data structure." Or maybe it just
sounds
unclear.

To clarify, I'd point out that at the _segment_level_, any type of
element
(simple or composite) can be defined to repeat. Component elements (ie.
simple data elements within a composite) cannot be defined as repeating
within the confines of the composite.

Andy,

For more guidance on this please go to the Design Rules & Guidelines
which
are included in the X12 Standards book. Section 2.7 Repeating Data
Elements
should help to answer your questions.

I would insert the verbiage here, but I do not have the latest version
of
the standards in softcopy and Section 2.7 is much too lengthy to
manually
type all of it into this message.

A repeating data element would occur in a data segment or in a composite
data structure. When an element is using as a repeating data element a
repetition designator must be used. Section 3.7.3.3 of X12.6 Application
Control Structure defines a repetition designator. Basically it's an
element
that indicates the maximum number of occurrences of the simple data
element
or the composite data structure. The repetition designator can also
indicate
that a repeating element may occur no more than once, or contain a
specific
value greater than one.
