Great suggestion, Mickey. We did this for one customer and the talking
heads who came just got a deer in the headlights look and told us they
weren't expecting to have to demo their product, even though they'd been
given a *very detailed* RFQ more than a month ahead of time. Although,
to protect the salespeople (I'm feeling generous today) I won't mention
the name of the company, but it was indeed, one of the LARGER and most
POPULAR translators out there.

Good answer, Art. I had assumed, though, that she/he intended
"mistrustful", "untrusting", or the like as the actual meaning of the
message. Funny, I didn't think much about the poll until that reply
came back.

As far as this thought goes, I've usually moved the most popular
translators to the middle of the list when engaged to recommend
software. "There must be a reason..." often equates to "marketing",
"lemmings", "management by magazine", "herd mentality" - well, you get
the idea. Just my opinion.
If you are really checking out new software, ideab2bedi, then by
all means check out as many packages as possible. If necessary, get
help from people who have worked with multiple translators and know the
correct and tough questions to ask. A strategy that has worked well for
me in the past is to let the vendors know that you will be asking them
to begin/build a small implementation on the spot (phone or on-site).
The catch is they will not know anything about it until the presentation
starts. Many will struggle, a few will decline altogether. Real-life
experience beats the brochure or market share numbers for selecting
software in my book.

And just how have you jumped to the conclusion, based on
anything read in or
into the responses, that any one of us is "untrustworthy"? As
professionals, most of us are willing to be open and candid, and
we do not
hide behind pseudonyms. It is charactaristic of people worthy
of trust to
know and be known. The untrustworthy are generally the ones who
need to
conceal their identities ... and to become defensive when their
motives are
questioned.

This has got to be the most untrustworthy group of people.
Can't
anyone just break from the normal day to day drudgery that we
call
EDI and do something different. Does it really matter why a
poll is
conducted? Have you ever just been involved in a poll just
because
you liked the question?
Maybe someone out there is looking for a new translator but
can't
decide on which one to choose. What if the results of this poll
showed, although not scientifically accurate, that one
translator is
more popular ( or at least used more often) than another. I
mean,
who wouldn't want to at least check out the most popular
translator.
There must be a reason for its popularity and widespread use.
I do appreciate the feedback from everyone that has provided
input to
the poll so far.......
