RE: HIPAA Article

David,
The use of EDI in the medical products supply chain is very mature and much
more widespread than many people recognize.
HIPAA and the medical products supply chain information exchanges do not
intersect -- at the present time. Thus, the use of EDI in either one of
these sectors would not affect the other. HIPAA administrative
simplification and the specified transactions relate to the financial
transactions for paying for health care, whnile the supply chain
transactions relate to buying, invoicing, paying for, providing custom and
standard electronic catalogs, as well as a variety of post-sale reporting
transactions. These transactions are well established in the medical and
pharmaceutical products supply chain using the EDI standards, and have been
for over a decade. This includes transactions between manufacturers and
distributors/wholesalers, distributors/wholesalers and hospitals and other
providers, and manufacturers/distributors/wholesalers and the group
purchasing organizations, such as AmeriNet, Premier, Consorta, etc.
On the other hand, medical product identification using the UPN will
eventually find its way into the HIPAA sector. As a matter of fact, several
years ago there was pending regulation in California that would have
required that all medical products used for home health must be identified
using the UPN for all MediCal Home Health Claims. I don't believe this
requirement was ever finalized.

There had been some discussion a few years back that HIPAA would
encourage more medical supply chain e-commerce/EDI but it looks like
getting HIPAA/EDI going has become more challenging that expected as
Rachel eluded to.

EDI for the medical products supply chain is a walk in the park when
compared to EDI, etc. for HIPAA. I know, I was one of the EDI pioneers
in
the health care medical products supply chain transition from
proprietary
order entry systems to the X12 EDI standards. Actually, I implemented
the
first 850 PO in health care between American Hospital Supply (which
became
Baxter Healthcare, and is now Allegiance Healthcare) in 1985 with
Hospital
Corporation of America. I would strongly suggest that you not
underestimate
the challenges of EDI for Healthcare Administrative Simplification.

I worked 3 years in EDI for a hardlines (hardware) distributor and now I
have been with a medical device manufacturer for 5. There really was no
real "transition" for me. We still receive orders, we still send
invoices,
etc. There are more players involved for sure...hospitals, doctors,
patients, suppliers, distributors... Now as of last year, I've started
working with our reimbursements department (most of our products are not
sold to patients) and that is definitely a different animal--claims and
patient copays, etc.
Maybe it would be an easier transition for you to stay on the
manufacturing
side of healthcare to begin with???? I would have to say that the first
5
years I was here helped fill in the blanks about the healthcare
environment
before I ever starting thinking about claims and such. Hope this helps!
