RE: Gentran:Server Unix - Business Rules

Scott,
I think what Seeburger and other B2B companies are attempting to do is
simplify the data integration process which typically has been the most
difficult issue with EDI. There have been a number of companies that
have built proprietary functions to do what you have described but it is
has been an expensive and difficult undertaking for most organizations.

I would argue that EDI is not longer only a transport and translation
function. EDI is a subset of Business2Business Integration. B2Bi is
all about coordinating information among businesses and their
information systems.
Today companies are challenged like never before to be as efficient as
possible. The ability to strengthen an EDI program by adding business
rules to the process gives companies additional flexibility to be more
efficient.
Imagine the reduction in receivables a company could realize if, upon
receipt of an 850, the EDI translator, based on the product being
ordered, or the customer, or the dollar amount, could look at the
customer's receivable status in the ERP to determine if they are
current. If they are current, then the 850 is translated and sent to
the ERP, if they are not current, the order is held, the accounting
department is notified via email, the account is worked now that they
have the leverage of an additional order, and once the accounting
department resolved the outstanding amount, they send a email which
releases the 850. EDI and Business Process Integration working
together.
I am very interested in hearing from the EDI community regarding your
opinions. We (Seeburger) believe it is essential to be able to
integrate business processes with EDI (not just XML). What are your
thoughts?

A more apropos question would be why are we integrating business rules
into
what is arguably a transport and translation function (EDI?)
Shouldn't EDI be simply sending application files to validation
routines,
and returning (mapped) reason codes back to the trading partner as a
response document?
