RE: HIPAA Level 5 Validation
You are referring to the WEDI SNIP Transaction Compliance and
Certification White paper
(http://snip.wedi.org/public/articles/testing2.0.pdf ). This white
paper addresses the testing (and industry certification) of HIPAA
transactions. Changes to this white paper are currently under
discussion within the WEDI testing workgroup.
In a production environment there have been recent discussions on this
listserv over what should and shouldn't be done in an EDI translator
(and related software). Are you planning to use a translator to
accomplish WEDI level testing? There are less complex products on the
market to help accomplish this.

Subject: [EDI-L] HIPAA Level 5 Validation
Can any one tell me to what level you expect a translator to validate to
SNIP Level 5 compliance?
"Level 5 compliance states: Testing for valid
code set values. This level of testing will not only validate the code
but also make
sure the usage is appropriate for any particular transaction. Validates
sets and tables such as CPT, ICD9, CDT, NDC, status codes, adjustment
codes, and their appropriate use for the transaction."
The "such as" leads me to believe that translators should be expected to
validate all external code sets. Does this include Provider IDs,
Numbers, Zip Codes, Health Industry Identification numbers, and other
large and constantly changing code lists?
Your thoughts are appreciated!
