Subject: RE: [EDI-L] Trading Partner Length in EDIFACT
Hi Ron,

EDIFACT is in wide use in Australia and New Zealand.

In Australia, most people use their EAN number as their EDI Id and it's 15
characters.
EAN = European Article Number

EG: My EAN number is 9312345000005 (Yes, I actually registered it in 1989
<grin>)

However, there is no EAN body in N.Z. and our customers often use their
company name, which can often exceed 15 characters. EG: "AVERYROBINSONEDI"
which is 16 characters.

I think you may find that while most will use 15 charcaters or less, there
will be occasions where someone will want to use more because in accordance
to the standards, they feel they are entitiled to fill all 35 characters
<grin>. However, there's a bit of a catch to this, on the UNB field where I
specify my address, you would normally see something like:

+9312345000005:ZZ+

However, I can use the reverse rotuing address field and have an address
like this:

+9312345000005:ZZ:9312345999997+

Basically from what I understand, if you are sending a response back to me,
you address it to:

+9312345999997:ZZ:9312345000005+

IE: you switch the ID's around to reverse route back to me.

I have only ever seen this used in Custom's declarations (CUSDEC).

My understanding is that each EDI Id can be up to 35 chars.

IE: 35char:4char:35char

Hope it helps more than it confuses.

Hello Group
We have many custom programs and reports that use a file structure of 15
byte trading partner key field. I know that EDIFACT allows a length of
35 for the trading Sender/Receiver ID.
I have never seen a trading partner ID over 15 positions but would like
to know if anyone else has?
I would like to avoid changing our files and programs if it is not
realistic that a trading partner ID would be over 15 in length.
Any comments are appreciated.
Thanks.
