BOB:

Much of what you say is true; however our world is dictated by our
customers and even though we may not benefit much, I don't think the 800lbs
gorillas care much. This UCCNet is very expensive, but consider what happens
when there is confusion about the UPCs or UOM, which is the case in my
company..

Company X sends the wrong UPC and wrong UOM on their POs because of
a Sales Rep or Buyer, or blame it on the paperwork.. then..

Customer service have to manually fix the problems.. then..

Invoice and ASNs will be penalized because of wrong UPC, Wrong UOM,
Wrong Pricing, etc.. even if the totals $$$ Match that of the POs... then

Manufacturer losses $100.00 per issue, per document, per whatever
else Company X wants to charge them for.. including but not limited to "PAIN
and Suffering", ok maybe I am exaggerating, but you get the point.

In the end you may want to invest a chunk of money to get the right
UPCs, UOM or anything else that could possibly go wrong, to the buyer, or
consider paying another chunk to the Company X in fines + try getting them
to change the data in their system to the right UPC, pricing, UOM, etc...

Let me start by issuing the standard disclaimer that the following is my
opinion and not that of my company.

I have attended a UCCnet trading partner forum and have reviewed the
materials they provided. It seems that my company is being asked to spend
2500.00 per year(based on sales $) to place my item data on their server via
a web browser to then enable the retailers to sync their data across their
divisions. I also know I can pay some big $$ to a third party firm to
handle this process.

I don't understand how UCCnet directly benefits my company!

I have been involved in the retail industry and know how difficult it is to
handle new items, price changes, UPC codes etc. I recognize how the paper
trail gets longer with each retail staff person involved, and the sales
staff and brokers. I also know that the profit margin in the grocery
industry is <1% and the retail industry needs to take costs out of the
supply chain.

That said, then, by placing the data on the UCCnet system, the benefits seem
to accrue to the retailer. Other than having my item data in a central
location, what benefit is there for my company?

At least with EDI we can see the savings, but I can see only expenses with
UCCnet.

If anyone could clarify this, I'd appreciate it. Maybe I'm missing
something in the process. If so, I'd like to know what it is, so that I can
justify this program to Mgt in the future. But I need something tangible.

Please, NO sales reps. I have plenty of material.

Thanks in advance.

I guess it depends on what your definition of "official" is. Wal-Mart is a
member of UCCnet as are several (100+) other companies. As far as I know
there have not been any mandates involving fines at this time, but it is
suggested that you begin the process of synchronizing your data internally
and then sign up for UCCnet.

The process is NOT simple and is slow. Supposidly the benefits will far
outweigh the effort, especially as UCCnet functionality is enhanced.
