RE: Support of CRLF characters in transmission file

Quick comments:
CRLF is not one character but two, a carriage return (x0d in ASCII) and a
line feed (x0a in ASCII).
According to both the ISO 9735 standard which specifies EDIFACT syntax and
X12.5 and X12.6 which specify X12 syntax, the only thing that follows the
segment terminator is the first character in the next segment.
What often complicates this is that while the standards disallow CRLF, many
translators allow them in between segments while others don't. Most
traditional VANs don't support them, but some X.400 networks insert them
into EDI traffic. Another complicating factor is that by itself, either a
CR or an LF is valid as a segment terminator according to the
standards. They are only invalid when used in addition to a segment
terminator.
Prevailing best practice is to avoid using CRLF after the segment
terminator. You have all you need in the segment terminator, some
translators and VANs have problems with CRLF, and they take up needless
space and bandwidth (which you pay for if you use a VAN). How much
space? Let's take a wild guess that your average segment length is 40
characters, including the terminator. If you add CRLF, you are adding 5%
overhead that does absolutely nothing for either the sender or
receiver. If you don't use a VAN or if your VAN bills are fairly low, this
might not be a big deal. If you have a lot of traffic, it could be a
sizeable expense if you are paying your VAN by the kilocharacter.
If you have a trading partner that is sending CRLF (or wants you to send
them, and you don't want to use them, they might find the cost argument
more persuasive than the standards argument.
Hope this helps.
