And then after you've completed that effort that Ajay outlined, find out
what your current and potential trading partners are doing vis a vis the
various transaction/messages else you'll build a railroad whose rails won't
match with your trading partners.

Darren,

Just a word of caution.

You write:
"I work for a freight shipping company
and need to find all of the transactions that we could possibly require."

On July 28, 1996, Mark Hughes had responded, which made it to my forever EDI
implementation issues file. This is what Mark had to say,

"<snip> Start with a clean sheet of paper and ask yourself the crucial
question:

'What data do I need to exchange with my Trading Partner to run my business
better'.

When you have identified what data you need to exchange when, and what
business rules apply, then go looking for a message to stick the data in.
The messages are determined by the business needs, and not the other way
round<snip>"

Hope this helps.

Ajay

Are there any public sources of information on X.12 EDI standards or
specs? I'm trying to locate a listing of all the transaction types/codes
and their corresponding function. I work for a freight shipping company
and need to find all of the transactions that we could possibly require.
It's hard to justify the expense of the standards themselves from DISA
or ANSI since we're a very small company and are just starting out.

Additionally, does anyone know of any Perl modules / code that's been
built to handle EDI transactions?

Thanks in advance,
