In conjuction with a book I'm writing on using XML with legacy business
applications, I'm developing some open source utilities for converting
various formats to and from XML. These conversions are isomorphic
conversions, i.e., exact one-for-one conversions. XSLT is used for doing
logical conversions and mappings.

A side affect of this approach is that a schema can be created for the XML
representation of the non-XML format. This gives you the ability to do
business rule validation and other types of edits on the XML
representation. If you have it right in the XML, then you will have it
right in the flat file after conversion.

If you aren't going through an intermediate conversion step between your
native format and what your partner is expecting, this may not help
you. But, I though I would offer it if you find it applicable.

Contact me if you would like details.
