<TECH>, GEIS 800 -> neat trick

Hi List, since it look like parts of GEIS are down, here is what
Michael Burbury from GEIS wrote a couple of weeks ago.
"If you dial Async to GE on their 9.6Kbps rotary, you can also call
the GE
HPN rotaries at 33.6Kbps.
When you dial a GE HPN rotary, you will be prompted with:
HPN Country Node number and so on....
*
At the "*" prompt, send "mkiii" (lower case) and Enter.
This will result in "U#=" being returned and you will be on MKIII
ready to
do what you normally would do if you dialed the 9.6Kbps rotary -
except you
will be running at 33.6Kbps (modem and line dependant). This is a
well kept
secret.
Secondly, on behalf of GE GXS, I would like to appologise for impact
caused
from the loss of communications in N.Y. due to the Sept 11 disaster.
The
loss of some equipment in N.Y. has added extra pressure to the
redundant
rotaries that would normally service a smaller number of callers from
the
area.
This is resulting in timeouts within the GE network for this area and
is
being actively worked on by GE network representatives to restore full
service to our customers.
Thankyou and Best Regards,
Michael Burbury
