RE: EDI career question...

Rich,
You may already know this but the definition of a consultant is somebody
with a briefcase more than 50 miles from home. This may need updating
to 100 miles from home because of longer commutes.

Good point, but I got my certification after I got my job at Motorola ~
6
years ago. Your point brings a question to my mind that I have never
thought of before now. I wonder what % of PMPs are currently out of
work.
My guess is that the number is rather high because many of the PMPs have
jobs that are little more than "glorified" consultants, i.e. travel a
lot,
frequently change projects and clients, etc... We have all learned
that
the first place many company's decide to cut during difficult economic
times
are consultants.
I am not trying to knock consultants, whether or not they travel, I just
know that I could not live that type of lifestyle at this point in my
life.
With four kids, I am looking for a little more stability... :-)

Rich,
See you prove my point. You are a certified project manager (PMP?) and
you are employed. :)

I am certified in Project Management and my advice is to take the
mapping
courses instead. Project Management is quickly becoming a buzz word
these
days. Like the words EDI or B2B, Proj. Mang. means different things to
different people, particularly the Management crowd. Mapping courses
are
more direct and more concrete. Project Management is more nebulous.
Any certifications are "door openers"; However, in my experience,
technical
skills are better crow-bars these days... :-) Your wife probably has
the
experience and common sense that are simply "certified" via Project
Management... :-)

Gary,
Other than Fortune 50 companies that have large and dedicated EDI
groups, most companies are looking for EDI people to wear many hats
such as mapping. I would suggest your wife take some technical classes
or project management which is in demand these days. Look at
www.pmi.org.

Subject: [EDI-L] EDI career question...
Hi,
I am asking this more for my wife then myself. It seems like most
of
the EDI positions I see on Monster and such places also want mapping
experience. Are there many jobs out there for someone who knows EDI
very
well in terms of what the transactions should contain, how they apply to
manufacturing, the nuances of X.12 and such, but who has no mapping
experience ? Again, I am asking for my wife who was layed off August
8th
and is not having much luck trying to find a job as an Operations
Analyst,
but who has 8 years of EDI experience with trading partners such as John
Deere, Case and Cat.
Thanks....Gary
